“Artistic director caught in storm over nude scene at Boston Children’s Theatre” – Boston Globe
It was just a few days after I finished a respectable first draft of BARE STAGE that the Boston Children’s Theatre controversy was brought to my attention. This very public example of the battle between artistic freedom and censorship is only one of the issues surrounding nudity on stage. While BARE STAGE addresses many facets of that battle, it centers on the human aspect of two actresses, who are confronted with having to perform without clothes – what decisions do actors make and what pressures do they face?
These two articles describe the beginning of the controversy.
The situation has resolved, according to NH1, but I’m sure the emotional roller coaster ride for the company, board of directors and the audience will be felt for a long time.
